Vaginal thinning, dryness and itching The Pill often causes inflammation because it suppresses normal hormone production, in particular progesterone, which is an amazing anti-inflammatory. Post menopausal vaginal thinning and dryness responds to progesterone therapy but may take some time. Candida and other infections occur with greater frequency after menopause because of changes in the vagina.
Varicose veins When veins become varicose they are abnormally dilated and the valves inside do not work, possibly because of thinning of the vein walls. They occur more often in women than men, maybe as a result of excess oestrogen, as they are first seen in the premenstruum and thereafter might be painful at this time due to water retention. Oestrogen also accelerates the aging of collagen, weakening the walls of the veins. Varicose veins which occur in pregnancy are the result of the foetus pressing on the veins in the uterus. Piles are a form of varicose vein.
